Today’s Landscape: The State of HIV, HCV, STIs, Harm Reduction and LGBTQ Health

This plenary session will feature subject matter experts in each of the five SYNC focus areas to share the current “state of” and future implications in HIV, HCV, STIs, harm reduction and LGBTQ health. Each expert will discuss the most recent biomedical advancements, research, and policy impacts in their focus areas.

  • Brian Hujdich is Executive Director of HealthHIV and the National Coalition for LGBTQ Health.
  • Monica Gandhi MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine and Associate Division Chief (Clinical Operations/Education) of the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine at UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital.
  • Hyman Scott, MD, MPH is the Clinical Research Medical Director at Bridge HIV in the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
  • Aniruddha Hazra, MD is Associate Professor of Medicine University of Chicago, and Medical Director, UCM Sexual Wellness Clinic.
  • Andrea M. Lopez, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland.
  • Christopher S. Hall, MD, MS, AAHIVS is the Chief Medical Officer at Avita Care Solutions.
  • Jessica Deerin, PhD, MPH is a Viral Hepatitis Policy Advisor with the Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Igniting Health Equity: Visioning Syndemics and Advocacy

This plenary session will spark a greater understanding of syndemics by exploring how health conditions intertwined with social determinants create significant health challenges in addition to opportunities to advance health equity positions—particularly among LGBTQ+ communities. The discussion will fuel specialized, patient-centric policies and programs, offering actionable ideas and ideals to address these unique challenges. The session will underscore the importance of inclusive representation in shaping health policies by employing a syndemic framework. This approach fosters a comprehensive approach to health equity and creates supportive environments for all community members, especially those grappling with overlapping social and health challenges in current times.
