SUMMARY:Left Out of the Conversation - Women\, HIV\, and the Power of PrEP
DESCRIPTION:This podcast examines the significant underrepresentation of women\, particularly Black heterosexual women\, in HIV prevention and PrEP utilization. While women represented approximately 20% of new HIV infections in 2022\, only 4.6% of PrEP users are women. This trend diverges from global patterns\, where female PrEP uptake has seen exponential growth in certain regions. Key barriers identified include inaccurate risk perception\, as many women who acquire HIV do not perceive themselves to be at risk\, limited awareness\, cultural beliefs\, and stigma. Two guest speakers share their personal experiences with PrEP\, including navigating the healthcare system\, interacting with providers\, and facing stigma. They also offer insights into their sexual health journeys and propose strategies to better address women’s needs regarding PrEP.
