Sharifah Garvin, RN, BSN

« All Events

Sharifah Garvin, RN, BSN has been the Clinical Nurse for the Adolescent Initiative Program for over 16 years.

In her role, she has seen the department adapt to meet the needs of the patients, by incorporating additional social work support, a medical assistant and clinicians. As the sole RN, she is the link between the clinicians and the patients, assisting the social workers with helping the patients meet their medical needs. Works in conjunction with the PrEP Navigator and Medical Social Workers, to encourage medication adherence with patients, STI treatment and education. Sharifah is the Point of Care Testing Coordinator, certified Rapid HIV Tester and maintains other clinical related functions.

Prior to working as a nurse, Sharifah’s experiences included supervisory positions at BEBASHI, an HIV community based agency; which laid the foundation for understanding both the basis for medical and supportive needs for those diagnosed with HIV. Working as an Aide at CHOP and other locations, in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine, provided the insight for witnessing, understanding and participating in body’s healing process. As well as RN positions a Magee Rehabilitation Hospital and Horsham Clinic.

When not working, Sharifah spends time with her husband, family and friends. She enjoys traveling, crafting – knitting, leisurely reading and spectator sports. As a Star Wars fan, Sharifah prefers the classic canon. "A person can feel that their job is thankless. In this program, I strive to do my part to help support and encourage the patients to grow. Not only with understanding and accepting their diagnosis, but learning to self-advocate and navigate the health care system to the best of their ability. In turn, I get to see the personal growth of the patients while they are in our care. The best part is when unexpectantly they acknowledge and thank you for your efforts."
