Unifying HIV Service Delivery: Pharmacy-Based HIV Prevention and Treatment Services
Heather Ivy Society, Faebris Medical, Clinipharm Global Health, and Trustee Drugs present an innovative project aimed at transforming HIV care in Atlanta. The collaboration introduces an alternative care model to mitigate HIV disparities in a high-impact area. Our program initiative, The End Starts With “U” – Unifying HIV Service Delivery, introduces a pharmacist-led care model that includes HIV testing coupled with advanced HIV prevention and treatment. The comprehensive services are offered within the accessible space of the Trustee Drugs pharmacy.
This collaborative endeavor also involves a medical partner, Faebris Medical, prescribing biomedical interventions in a private treatment area connected to the community pharmacy. The pivotal role of the pharmacist, staffed by Clinipharm Global Health, includes educating patients on the latest biomedical HIV prevention and treatment options, as well as actively dispensing or administering HIV medications. Additionally, Clinipharm Global Health provides specialized education to pharmacy students on the complexities of HIV therapeutics, dosing, administration, and potential side effects of therapies. The community pharmacy serves as an inclusive host venue to offer HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services to individuals residing in a high-incidence area of the city.
The overarching aim of this approach is to promote equitable access to HIV prevention and treatment for those living in areas with limited HIV care services. Such expanded collaborations improve our ability to effectively care for our most vulnerable populations and contribute to Ending the HIV Epidemic.
