- Derailing the Train: How to Address the Intersection of HIV, HIV, SUD, and Workforce Development in Appalachia
The health and economic wellbeing of Appalachia can be related to a train roaring through rural communities. The engine of the train used to be the opioid crisis and now is poly-drug use. The next cars are Hepatitis A, B, and C. Next is workforce development and educational attainment challenges, followed by the caboose of the train which is HIV. These different components of health and economy are not occurring in isolation; therefore, we need to engage partners across these sectors to jointly address health and economy. The models CEG is employing plans to address these challenges by utilizing community health workers and engaging with providers across HIV, HCV, and SUD care.
